six months ago i left the firehouse at sandy hook to attend a vigil at a church in newtown. the church was st. rose of lima provided over by father bob senior robert weiss. the church was filled. it was a powerful and moving experience. people listened to the service through the windows and the p.a. system outside. i said that evening the world is watching newtown and in fact, for six months the world has watched newtown and it has since seen a story of unparalleled and unprecedented courage and fortitude and now we will continue to watch newtown but the world is also watching the united states senate. we need to be worthy of the courage and strength that newtown has demonstrated in moving ahead. i thank the majority leader harry reid and all of my colleagues who have determined that we will bring this bill back. not only to honor the memories of the newtown victims and keep faith with them, but also to make this country better and safer, worthy of these children. beautiful and innocent at the time of their passing all of their future ahead of them, educators who worked for

it has already been three months since hurricane sandy. if this lee amendment is adopted, it will be delayed further. i strongly oppose the lee amendment and i want to talk a minute more about why and i'm going to turn it over to senator schumer and others on the floor. we should not use disasters as an excuse to push ideology. and that's, i'm afraid, what the other side is doing. they want to look for any excuse to cut the budget. i want to say again, we've already cut this budget by $1.5 trillion. and i want to say for the 11th, 12th, 13th final, we're never going to cut our way to a balanced budget. i want my colleagues on the other side of the aisle to hear it. we're not going to cut our way to a balanced budget. it is going to be a combination of revenue increases and reductions -- and cuts, which i'm all for. and the last negotiation that we did was exactly that, that president biden -- president -- vice president biden and president obama negotiated, a combination of revenues and reductions. all the lee amendment does is reduce agai

sandy hook was a safe school in a safe town. candidly, it was inconceivable that such a tragedy could happen there, but it did. i can't exaggerate how this senseless murder of 20 beautiful young children and six incredibly brave adults affected me and millions around this country. i think it's fair to say that this event really shocked the conscience of america. the pictures of these little victims still bring tears to the eyes of millions. i have been very impressed with one page of the "new york daily news," and i carry it when i talk to people trying to get their votes. some say no. and i look at this picture of these smiling faces. and in the middle, "shame on us." this was the cover of the "new york daily news." and i think it carries the message of what we are trying to do here. and i hope to show that during the time i speak. i think despair that we all felt for some of us has changed to determination. and this amendment, i believe, over time will finally begin to address not only the wanton brutal violence, but the weapo
